Title Gender Specific Analysis of Virtual Communication in Panel Online Focus Groups

Abstract This empirical study focuses on different communication patterns of male and female participants in Panel Online Focus Groups. These Focus Groups were conducted in order to collect data concerning the image and perception of political parties during the national parliamentary election campaign in Austria 2002. In order to observe change in attitude onthe individual level, these online Focus Groups were carried out with the same participants repeatedly during several weeks. The first session took place two months before the elections.
The panel design provides qualitative data to analyze how certain gender specific patternsevolve and change in virtual discussions during the period of study. It is analyzed whether the gender specific structure and communication dynamics of the discussion groups are influenced by increased familiarity with the discussion medium. The qualitative analysis will be carried out by comparing political issues, statements and participation rates of women and men for each session. Different types of discussion behaviour can be identified and systematic differences between male and female participants are compared over time. The panel design makes it possible to observe the impact of increasing know how about online chats on group dynamics and individual chat behaviour.
